We heard a fascinating talk about place-names associated with rivers, streams and ‘waters’ given by Dr Jake King at the National Library of Scotland on Saturday, 19 September. Jake is the researcher with Ainmean-àite na h-Alba, the national body responsible for establishing and promulgating approved forms of Gaelic place-names.

This event was part of our successful ongoing partnership with the National Library. Last year, we held four successful events at the NLS as part of the Edinburgh 900 celebration — marking 900 years since Edinburgh was established as a burgh — and we recently published a book based on these, Gaelic in Edinburgh through the Centuries. The book includes a chapter by Dr King on Gaelic place-names around Edinburgh.
Many thanks to Jake for a stimulating talk and to the NLS team for organising the event!
