Our new bilingual book A’ Ghàidhlig ann an Dùn Èideann Tro na Linntean / Gaelic in Edinburgh Through the Centuries is now available. Challenging the common misconception that Gaelic was ‘never spoken here’, it looks at the role of Gaelic in Edinburgh from the Middle Ages to the present day, including history, demography, place-names, literature and education.
The book is based on four presentations at the National Library of Scotland that we held in 2025 as part of the Edinburgh 900 celebration, marking 900 years since Edinburgh was established as a burgh. We felt that it was important that Gaelic and the Gaels should be given due recognition in the story of Edinburgh.
