Blasad

[Tionndadh Gàidhlig]

For St Andrews Day, join us for a taste of Gaelic culture with poetry, music, and song in the company of the Scottish Makar.

Drawing on the talents of young Edinburgh musicians, come and hear a range of beautiful Gaelic songs which also cast a light on how Edinburgh and the Gaelic world have been intertwined over the centuries.

The event will be hosted by Dr Peter Mackay – the first Makar who is also a Gaelic poet. He is a Senior Lecturer in Literature in the School of English at the University of St Andrews. Originally from the Isle of Lewis, he is an expert in Scottish and Irish literature from 1800 onwards, and especially in Scottish Gaelic literature. He was appointed Scottish Makar in 2024.

Music and song will be provided by young Edinburgh musicians – Laura Penman, on the clàrsach, Alasdair Scott, accordion, and singers Tawana Maramba, Iris MacLeod, Seren Maramba and Oisín Fuentes.
